Navigating Grief, Loss, and Change

Our November Theme 🐚

Our November theme is based on my book, Navigating Grief and Loss: 25 Buddhist Practices to Keep Your Heart Open to Yourself and Others. We’ll explore ways in which we can meet personal losses like the death of people we love, divorce, or getting fired or laid off, as well as the losses that arise from societal, technological, and political changes.

I wrote the book because the practices and teachings I learned in my Buddhist training supported me through times of grief and change, and enabled me to be present for very hard things without looking away from them or trying to control them. So this month, we’ll explore how you can:

  1. Hold your losses and pain and grief and sadness with kindness, and know that they don’t have to devastate you, destroy, you or ruin your life. You’ll learn to allow yourself to feel your struggles without shame or blame.

  1. Cultivate patience and take care of yourself in the midst of loss and change, to recognize that it’s okay to have many feelings about what’s happening, and to let go of trying to control everything.

  1. Recognize that you are not alone – that the suffering and pain of grief and change is shared by everyone everywhere, and you can use it to connect and support yourself, and others too.

Plan to practice the guided audio meditation each day, and answer the Weekly Inquiry on the chat or in the comments.

5pm on the start of Daylight Savings Time.

In the northern hemisphere, the autumn and winter have historically been times to slow down, to stay indoors when it’s cold, and to rest. You might feel lazy to allow yourself to follow the season, do a little bit less, and snuggle at home if you can, but I encourage you to try it. I’m practicing hygge — getting cozy and comfy — and I hope you’ll join me. Instead of pushing yourself this season, slow down a little, take time to read, practice meditation on the couch before bed, and appreciate a home-cooked meal and all your domestic blessings, too.

Our Steady, Calm, and Brave sessions are a wonderful way to practice hygge too! These twice monthly live meditation sessions meet via Zoom from 9-9:30pm EST, a great way to wind down your day and relax. The next session is Thursday 11/13! These meetings are a perk of becoming a Paid Member, so if you’re not one already, sign up so you can join us and get other perks too!

See you tomorrow with our first audio recording for this theme. Until then, may you appreciate your measure of safety, ease, and comfort. May all beings have shelter, food, and love.

Metta+++,

Kim✨
