A Meditation to Know What You Have

It's Okay to Enjoy Your Life 1 of 4 🪷

If you’re just joining us for this month’s theme, please read the earlier posts:
Introduction

If you watched Season 3 of The White Lotus—a popular show about the carelessness of wealthy people on luxury vacations—you might remember a moment when a Southern matriarch, played by Parker Posey, says:

“We’re lucky, it’s true. No one in the history of the world has lived better than we have. Even the old kings and queens. The least we can do is enjoy it. If we don’t, it’s offensive. It’s an offense to all of the billions of people who can only dream that one day they could live like we do.”

It’s a very ignorant comment from someone oblivious to the causes of her wealth. And still, there’s an uncomfortable truth behind it — for all of us. Because even if you’re not rich, if you’re reading this, you have access to things most humans throughout history never did: hot and cold potable water available 24/7, medical care, education and literacy, technology and tools like phones and the internet, and all sorts of goods for comfort, like a bed and a couch and socks and sneakers — and more than many in the world enjoy today.

Today’s meditation is to remind you of what you have (in whatever measure you have it), stop taking it for granted, and appreciate it. Remember that acknowledging your blessings doesn’t mean you’re free from struggle, pain, or sorrow — but it means you have the wisdom to understand the value of your life. Plan to practice everyday, and check-in via our Subscriber Chat ⬇️.

This week, notice when you eat food, when you sit down and watch television or scroll the internet without interruption or fear, and each time you make a purchase. Then say silently, I appreciate this blessing.

“People often think, “There is so much suffering in the world—how can I be carefree and happy?” If your unhappiness could somehow help suffering people, that would be fine. But if it doesn’t help them, it’s not necessary. It’s better to be totally open and to receive the blessings and pass them on, making wishes and aspirations that this may benefit them all.”

Another rainy weekend.

My old zen teacher used to say, “Don’t miss your life!” He wanted us to appreciate this very moment (which will never happen again) and not lose ourselves in stories, fantasies, wishes, and strategies. So — don’t miss your life this week, my friends! Stay in touch with your senses and connected to your beautiful presence.

May we be attentive and grateful for our measure of happiness and well-being. Sabbe satta sukhi hontu. May it be so!

Metta+++,

Kim✨
