How to Be a B̶e̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ Person

Our July Theme 🌳

I’ve always wanted to be a “better” person — nicer, smarter, more generous, less angry, less impatient, steadier, more productive — and a thousand other improvements that I thought I should make in order to feel good about myself and make a difference in the world. But I’ve discovered that if I relate to myself as a self-improvement project, I’m really not getting any “better” — and neither are you. You’re simply creating more judgment and self-criticism, and feeling worse and worse about your perceived mistakes and short-comings.

Instead, I’ve discovered that learning to allow myself to be a person is a far more useful approach to my life. Rather than being at odds with myself or trying to fix or repair something “broken”, I can simply experience my humaness in each moment and reconnect to my inherent openness and clarity. Then I can choose to orient my speech and actions in ways that are beneficial — not because I need to be a better person but because I already am one.

So this month, I’ll be sharing teachings and contemplations to help you truly be a person — to connect with your humanness, good sense, and wisdom. This doesn’t mean to pay more attention to your thoughts, plans, conditioning, or belief systems, but rather to feel your own presence and sensations of heart, body, and mind.

It’s your generosity that makes this letter possible. If it’s beneficial to you, become a Paid Subscriber today 🪴.

For the next four Mondays, I’ll share an audio meditation related to this month’s theme. I encourage you to listen and practice everyday, and use the exercises and contemplative prompts to support your efforts.

Remember! The intention of this newsletter is to provide support for you to take care of yourself wisely and kindly. Be gentle and mindful—if you need to rest or take a break, don’t be afraid to do so.

Many Blessings

A visit to the Grafton Peace Pagoda last weekend.

I know that all of you are doing your best to stay steady, wise, and brave even as you’re struggling with personal difficulties, dealing with upsetting changes, and witnessing stupidity and cruelty in the world. Thank you for your efforts and for your compassion. I wish you’re finding time for rest and ease, and perhaps enjoying the summer (unless you’re enjoying the winter in your part of the world 🌎).

Reminder: Steady, Calm, and Brave, our new twice-monthly 30 minute meditation sessions, begins Sunday 7/13 at 9am EST. Learn more here.

Note that the first meditation this month will be sent on Tuesday, not tomorrow! Until then, may you be safe, feel steady, and rest with ease.

Metta+++,

Kim✨
