Our June theme is an especially relevant topic for me right now, because I’m in the midst of an auspicious life transition that is fulfilling and gratifying, while at the same time, many oppressive and harmful policies are being enacted in our country and abroad, and a lot of beings are suffering. So I’m grateful and delighted for my new garden and quirky little house, and I feel sad and helpless knowing others are struggling. For a long time, I would feel conflicted and guilty, wonder if I should stop being happy, if I should just try to not think about all the troubles in the world, or maybe I should give away everything I have to those who need it more than me. But I learned that none of these are wise or effective choices. Instead, it’s possible to appreciate what I have and at the same time recognize the struggles of others and feel their difficulties and pain too.

For the next few weeks, we’ll learn how we can notice and cultivate gratitude for our measure of happiness and well-being, feel content and appreciate what we have without shame, develop generosity through compassion, and remember the poignant impermanent truth of life — that no matter who we are, we will inevitably get sick, grow older, and lose everything we have.

Quirky little house and garden.

We’ll be taking our inspiration from this quote from Tsoknyi Rinpoche:

“People often think, “There is so much suffering in the world—how can I be carefree and happy?” If your unhappiness could somehow help suffering people, that would be fine. But if it doesn’t help them, it’s not necessary. It’s better to be totally open and to receive the blessings and pass them on, making wishes and aspirations that this may benefit them all.”

Plan to listen and practice everyday, and use the exercises and contemplative prompts to support your efforts. The intention of this newsletter is to help you take care of yourself, so be careful and mindful—if you need to rest or take a break, don’t be afraid to do so. Check in with our community and ask questions in our chat!

Friends, I currently have availability in my schedule for a few more private students, so if you’ve been curious about working together one-on-one, I invite you to reach out. I combine traditional compassion and mindfulness practices with non-judgmental support and insight, to help you feel more at ease with yourself and others too. Learn more at the link and schedule a complimentary introductory session where we can explore how this work might be of benefit for you.
