Even after many years of meditation and training, when I have powerful emotions like grief or anger, the first thought I have is, “Why does this keep happening to me?!” I feel frustrated and upset that these painful and disruptive feelings won’t stop arising or just disappear when I want them to go. Sound familiar? Probably. Because most of us don’t know how to properly take care of our emotions, and you’re likely trying to ignore your frustration, get rid of your anxiety, or fight with feelings of self-loathing or sadness. But as you’ve discovered by now, none of this works and will simply make you feel worse.
I’ve learned that turning my attention to painful feelings disrupts and slows down their energy, and giving patience instead of resistance helps me feel more at ease with them and about myself. It also enables me to be less reactive — I don’t have to do something or say something at all — I can simply experience them with interest, understanding, and openness.
For the next four weeks we’ll be exploring ways to do this — to create a healthier relationship to all parts of ourselves, especially our hardest feelings. Every Monday, starting tomorrow, you’ll get a guided meditation, with exercises and contemplative prompts to support your efforts. Plan to listen and practice everyday. The intention is to take care of yourself, so be gentle and use your wisdom—if you need to rest or take a break, don’t be afraid to do so. If you have questions, ask in the comments, and be sure to encourage everyone in our community by posting your experiences as you befriend your powerful emotions over the next few weeks.
It was marvelous that so many of you participated in last month’s theme, Cultivating a Steady Mind! Very glad for your practice and your heart — thank you! If you missed it or you’d like to access the recordings again, you can listen here.
